Secondary Education Curriculum for Teacher Certification

This certificate is administered by the School of Education .

K-12 covers early childhood through adolescence level; ages 0-21.

Secondary/Middle covers early adolescence through adolescence level; ages 10-21.

If you complete a K-12 program in family and consumer education; world language (majors only); music-choral, general, instrumental; physical education; or speech and language, you will be certified early childhood through adolescence level which covers a wide range of all ages in public schools.

Enrollment caps are in effect for all secondary/K-12 programs. See your major/minor department for enrollment cap policies and additional requirements needed to apply to PEP.

Meet the following requirements:

Certifiable Major

Complete at least one certifiable major. You can enhance your employment options with an additional certification in a minor field. For information on the requirements for your major and minor, check with the individual departments and see the section(s) in this catalog on your field(s) of study. Note that requirements for the teaching major/minor sometimes differ from requirements for the nonteaching major/minor.

Take the following courses for certification

EDUC 200 - Professional Portfolio Development 1 cr. or dept equiv
EDUC 205 - Pluralism for Educators 2 cr.
EDUC 300 - Professional Portfolio Development II 1 cr. or dept equiv
EDUC 331 - Educational Technology 3 cr. (or music and physical ed majors)
EDUC 351 - Educating Students with Special and/or Other Needs in the General Education Environment 3 cr. (Communicative Disorders graduate students do not need EDUC 351 )
EDUC 381 - Educational Psychology 2 cr.
EDUC 382 - Managing Learning Environments 1 cr.
EDUC 385 - Teaching the Early Adolescent 3 cr. (EDUC 385 not required for Family and Consumer Sciences, Music, or Physical Education majors)

Education

EDUC 386 - Literacy in the Secondary School 3 cr. (or ENGL 381 if you are an English major/minor)
EDUC 390 - Reading and Writing for Content Understanding 3 cr. (or ENGL 355 and ENGL 356 if you are an English major/minor)

Note

Family and Consumer Sciences, Music and Physical Education majors are exempt from EDUC 390 .

Teaching methods course

Take the teaching methods course in your major(s) and minor, if you want to be certified in your minor.

Science and Social Science

Science majors and minors take

NRES 370 - Introduction to Environmental Study and Education 3 cr.

Social science majors and minors take

ECON 110 - Principles of Macroeconomics 3 cr. or
ECON 272 - Personal Finance 3 cr.
NRES 370 - Introduction to Environmental Study and Education 3 cr. (except psychology majors or minors who do not major or minor in another social science field).

Humanities Course

One humanities course must be literature.

Science Electives

Among science electives, you must take one biological and one physical science.

Student teaching, 3-16 credits.

12-16 credits are required for initial licensure. Student teaching will include EDUC 400 or dept equiv. See the Student Teaching section.

Notes

Achieve a 2.75 overall GPA as well as a 2.75 GPA in your major, minor, concentration, and teacher certification courses, or be in the upper half of your class before you student teach.

Earn a grade of “pass” or 2.0 GPA (C) or better in all areas of student teaching. You CANNOT be certified if you do not pass or if you receive a grade less than C for student teaching in your major.

State teacher licensing rules may change at any time due to legislative or licensing changes.
